Grana Padano is a full flavoured, nutty, savoury hard cheese. It has a fruity aroma with a dense, crumbly texture. Although most commonly used for cooking; this cheese is a delicious addition on a cheeseboard for anyone who likes a strong, hard cheese.
Cistercian monks of Chiaravalle created this cheese in the 12th century and it is still made throughout the Po River Valley in Italy. Grana means “grainy” or “granular”, and this is how the cheese looks like when it is cut open. Grana Padano would also be easily recognised as the wheel is enormous, usually ranging from 70 to 88 pounds.
